Getting Around, Schools & Where Baytown Is Headed

Major Highways & Commute

I-10 (the East Freeway) is Baytown's primary route west into downtown Houston. TX-146 runs north–south through town, crossing the Houston Ship Channel via the Fred Hartman Bridge and connecting south toward Texas City and La Marque. The Grand Parkway (TX-99) links I-10 to TX-146 for regional trips. Downtown Houston is about 26 miles away, roughly a 30–35 minute drive outside rush hour.

Schools

Baytown is served by Goose Creek Consolidated ISD, a 34-school district with about 24,000 students pre-K–12, including Impact Early College High School and the district's two largest comprehensive high schools, Goose Creek Memorial and Sterling.

Growth & New Construction

Baytown's largest employer, the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex, employs roughly 7,000 people at the 5th-largest refinery in the U.S., anchoring a manufacturing/petrochemical base that's helped regional employment grow faster than the state and national average. The redevelopment of the former San Jacinto Mall into a 105-acre mixed-use marketplace is the city's biggest visible growth story right now.
